Nomination Period Open for 2026 Municipal and School Board Election

The nomination period for the 2026 Municipal and School Board Election is official open as of May 1, 2026.

Individuals interested in running for the offices of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, or Councillor are encouraged to review the requirements and begin the nomination process.

Candidate Information Packages are available online at hamiltontownship.ca/candidate-info. Printed copies may also be available at the Township Office upon request.

To qualify as a candidate, you must be:

• A Canadian citizen
• At least 18 years of age
• A resident of the Township of Hamilton, or
• A non-resident who, or whose spouse, owns or rents property in the Township
• Not legally prohibited from voting
• Not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office.

To run for Mayor or Councillor, candidates are required to complete and submit both the Nomination Paper (Form 1) and the Endorsement of Nomination (Form 2). A minimum of 25 endorsement signatures is required, and candidates are encouraged to collect additional signatures to account for any that may be deemed invalid.

Nominations may be filed between May 1, 2026 and August 21, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. (Nomination Day). All nominations must be filed in person with the Clerk’s Office, and appointments are required. Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact the Township Office to book an appointment or to ask questions about the process by calling 905-342-2810.

Individuals wishing to run for School Board Trustee must file their nomination with the Town of Cobourg at 55 King Street West, Cobourg. Those wishing to run for French School Board Trustee must file their nomination with the City of Oshawa Municipal Office, located at 50 Centre Street South, Oshawa.
