Nomination Day for the 2026 Municipal Election is August 21

The 2026 Municipal and School Board Election is approaching, and the Township of Hamilton is reminding prospective candidates that Friday, August 21, 2026, is Nomination Day.

Nomination papers for the offices of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Councillor must be filed with the Municipal Clerk no later than 2:00 p.m. on August 21.

Planning to Run?

Candidates who have not yet filed their nomination papers are encouraged to contact the Clerk’s Office as soon as possible to arrange an appointment. On Nomination Day, filings will be accepted between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Candidates must submit all required documentation, including the Nomination Paper (Form 1) and Endorsement of Nomination (Form 2), with at least 25 eligible endorsements. Candidates are encouraged to obtain additional endorsements in case any signatures are determined to be invalid.

All required forms and candidate information are available at hamiltontownship.ca/vote.

Candidates must also provide proof of identity and pay the applicable nomination fee:

  • Mayor: $200
  • Deputy Mayor: $100
  • Councillor: $100

Nomination fees are refundable provided the required campaign financial statement is filed by the applicable deadline.

Filing Your Nomination

Nomination papers for Township of Hamilton municipal offices must be filed in person at:

Appointments are required. Candidates can contact the Clerk’s Office at 905-342-2810 to arrange an appointment or ask questions about the nomination process.

Individuals seeking nomination as a School Board Trustee must file their nomination papers with the appropriate municipal Clerk. English-language School Board Trustee nominations for the local area are filed with the Town of Cobourg, while French-language School Board Trustee nominations are filed with the City of Oshawa.

Candidates are encouraged to review the Township’s Candidate Information resources before filing to ensure they are familiar with the eligibility requirements, required forms and other obligations under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.

Election Day and Voting Information

The 2026 Municipal and School Board Election will take place on Monday, October 26, 2026. Hamilton Township electors will vote for a Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and three Councillors, as well as School Board Trustees.

Voting will be available conveniently and securely by telephone or internet throughout the voting period, beginning Friday, October 16, 2026, and continuing until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 26, 2026.

Electors who require assistance may also attend the Township Office or one of our Voter Assistance Centres during the voting period to receive support in casting their ballot.
