Creighton Heights Water System Update – Annual Free Chlorination - End

Important information for water users supplied by the Creighton Heights Drinking Water System:

Annual Water Distribution System Maintenance:

This is an update to our earlier communication dated September 2, 2025.

The Creighton Heights Water Treatment Plant is switching back to chloramination for disinfection of the Water Distribution system during this week of September 28, 2025.  Our annual Fall Distribution maintenance activity is now complete.  For the past month we have been chlorinating with Free Chlorine for Secondary Disinfection of the Distribution System to control nitrification.  Many Utilities that ordinarily chloraminate, use Free Chlorine on a routine basis to control nitrification in their Distribution Systems.

Until next year’s Fall Distribution Flushing activity, Creighton Heights Water Treatment Plant will be chloraminating for Secondary Disinfection which is the result of adding chlorine to the naturally occurring ammonia in our well water source.  The naturally occurring ammonia mixed with sodium hypochlorite has the benefit of providing a stable water supply that inhibits bacterial growth while sharply reducing disinfection-by-products (DBP) and reducing treatment costs.

The change in the treatment process from chlorination back to chloramination will not affect water potability.  Consumers will notice a return of characteristics typical for the system. Kidney dialysis patients must make sure their home machines are adaptable for chloramines and chlorination.  Customers on dialysis machines should contact their physicians for more information.  Anyone with fish must always find another water source for the aquariums as either disinfection regime is harmful to fish.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the main office at 905-342-2810 at ext 147.  Thank you for your cooperation.
