Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week - November 3-9, 2025

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week - November 3-9, 2025

The Township of Hamilton is joining the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) and local fire departments to raise awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) during Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week.

Often called the “Silent Killer,” carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas that can be deadly. In Ontario, about 65% of CO incidents occur in the home, the place where we should feel safest.

During the week of November 3, 2025, residents will see CO safety information through mail, social media, and other channels. This campaign provides essential tips to help reduce CO risks in your home:

Key Steps to Protect Your Family:

  1. Have all fuel-burning appliances inspected annually by a TSSA-registered contractor. Find a registered contractor at COsafety.ca.
  2. Install working, certified CO alarms in your home, and regularly test them, replace batteries, and follow manufacturer instructions.
  3. Never use outdoor-only fuel-burning appliances indoors.

With the increased use of furnaces and fireplaces during colder months, it is especially important to maintain appliances properly and ensure CO alarms are functioning. Ontario homes typically have 4–6 fuel-burning appliances, all of which can pose a risk if not correctly maintained.
