Property Taxes
The Township of Hamilton collects property taxes on behalf of the Township, Northumberland County, and local school boards. These funds help support essential services such as road maintenance, parks and recreation facilities, and emergency services.
If you would like to change your school support designation, please contact us to request the Application for Direction of School Support form, to be submitted to the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC).
Important Notice: Property tax bills are mailed at the end of January and May. Property owners are responsible for ensuring bills are received and paid on time. Not receiving a bill does not exempt you from payment or from penalties and interest on late payments.
Please ensure the Tax Clerk has your correct mailing address or complete a mailing address change form.

Property Assessments
The Township of Hamilton does not determine property assessments. Property values and classifications are set by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC), which administers a consistent, province-wide assessment system under the Assessment Act.
Each property owner receives a Property Assessment Notice from MPAC. This notice shows the assessed value and classification of your property based on a fixed valuation date. For the 2024 tax year, that date remains January 1, 2016, which marks the end of the last province-wide assessment cycle.
If your property has changed through new construction, a major renovation, or similar updates, MPAC will reassess the value and send you an updated notice. This assessment reflects what your property would have sold for on January 1, 2016, in its current state, including any changes made since.
Learn more by visiting MPAC's Property Assessment Notice webpage.
If you are a first-time homeowner, check out MPAC's First-time Homeowners' Hub.
Tax Certificates
If you're selling your property or refinancing your mortgage, you may need a tax certificate. These documents confirm whether there are any outstanding property taxes or charges owed to the Township and are often requested by lawyers or financial institutions.
To request a tax certificate, please email the Tax Clerk with the following details:
- Property address
- Roll number (if available)
- Your contact information
A non-refundable fee of $45.00 applies to each request. Payment must be received before processing can begin. You can:
- Pay in person at the municipal office during regular business hours
- Mail a cheque to the address listed on our website
Important: Please include the property address or roll number with your payment so we can match it to your request.
Once both the request and payment are received, we’ll begin processing. If you have any questions about the process, fee, or required details, feel free to contact the Tax Clerk, we’re happy to help.
