Fire Inspections and Burn Permits
The Township of Hamilton Fire Department is committed to promoting fire safety through inspections, public education, and responsible open-air burning practices. If you're planning to burn outdoors, set off fireworks, or need a fire inspection, please review the information below.
Burn Permits
If you would like to have an open-air fire (bonfire, fire pit) you will need to obtain a burn permit. Contractors will require a commercial permit in order to burn during daytime hours. Agricultural burn permits are required by farming properties in order to burn during the daytime hours.
Burning Restrictions and Yard Waste
- From April 1 to October 31 there is no daytime burning between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
- This includes open air pits and enclosed devices.
The Township uses the Wildland Fire Danger Rating System to help residents understand the risk of fire on any given day. This system provides guidance on how easily a fire could start and how difficult it may be to control.
Burning of leaves and grass clippings is not permitted. Northumberland County offers free curbside collection of leaf and yard waste from April through December. This is a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative to open-air burning.
For more information, refer to the Northumberland County Waste and Recycling Calendar or call 1-866-293-8379.
Important: Always check for burn bans or fire risk notices before burning. Conditions can change quickly due to weather and other factors.
Fire Inspections
Fire prevention inspections are conducted for all written complaints received by the Fire Department relating to potential fire hazards, and for all requests for fire prevention inspections to assess fire safety. Fire inspections help ensure that buildings meet the safety requirements outlined in the Ontario Fire Code.
You may need a fire inspection for:
- Business licensing
