The Township of Hamilton offers access to a variety of trails suited for walking, hiking, cycling, and motorized vehicle use. These nearby trails provide excellent opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty and outdoor recreation our region has to offer.

Northumberland County trails

With so many four-season, multi-use trails, Northumberland is a top outdoor destination.

Trails in the Township

Lime Kiln Trail

  • Location: Community Centre Road
  • Length: 0.6 km

Lime Kiln Trail passes by farmers' fields on its way through a grapevine and cedar-lined forest. A lime kiln operated on this trail in the 1800s. The trail opens up to a dead end road – Lime Kiln Trail Road and then to Cty Rd 45. Cross the road towards a metal-gated laneway. Walk the lane down to the Ball's Mill Conservation Area (scenic pond) to add another 1km to your journey. 

Nature Reserves and Conservation Lands

Bonebakker Nature Reserve

  • Location: 400 Wilson Drive, Baltimore
  • Acreage: 166 acres
  • Open to public by reservation: please contact info@nltrust.ca at least 24 hours in advance of your visit.

This nature reserve is located on the eastern end of the Oak Ridges Moraine and includes drumlins, pasture, hayfield, hardwood and cedar forests, and a headwater stream. A cattle pasture makes up over 60% of the nature reserve and provides habitat for a variety of wildlife. By arrangement with a local farmer, the pasture will continue to be used by cattle from about May to November.

Rice Lake Conservation Area

 

Acquired in 1972, the Rice Lake Conservation Area protects a large portion of the provincially significant wetland, Bewdley Marsh. Rice Lake Conservation Area is used for passive recreation, including nature appreciation, hiking, dog-walking and wildlife observations. Swimming and fishing are not permitted.

A large open space east of the parking lot is available for picnicking, with the trail starting on the north side of the parking lot. A hydro corridor bisects the conservation area. Please stay out of the corridor and respect neighbouring properties.

Important: Bear sightings have been reported in Rice Lake Conservation Area.
