Commissioner of Oaths
The Commissioners for taking Affidavits Act allows Municipal Clerks and other Officials to take various types of declarations and to administer oaths. It is recommended that you make an appointment with the Clerks Department to see a Commissioner of Oaths.
In order for a Commissioner to sign your document, please note:
- the person making the oath (declarant) must be present;
- the declarant must have valid photo identification. Identification should include your full name, address, and signature. No copies will be accepted;
- the document must be signed in front of the Commissioner.

We do not provide the services of a Notary Public. If your document requires the signature of a Notary Public, you will need to contact a private lawyer or a Notary Public entitled to practice law in Ontario, or a Justice of the Peace. Notary Publics can be found in your local phone directory.
Our Commissioner of Oaths can sign documents at their discretion, including but not limited to the following:
- Proof of residency;
- Transfer of vehicle ownership;
- Pension plan and insurance claim documents;
- Municipality forms; and,
- Other government-related forms.
The Commissioner of Oaths can also:
- Certify documents as "true copies"; and,
- Certify the signature of an identifiable individual.
The fee for Commissioning of Oath services is $5.00 per document for residents and $15.00 per non-resident and business entities.
