The Township of Hamilton encourages resident involvement through a variety of boards and advisory committees. Boards and committees provide valuable advice and recommendations to Council on specific subjects as defined by their Terms of References.

Advisory Committee and Board members are appointed by Council at the start of a new term of Council following an election every four years. Member terms of office are four years in length and expire at the end of Council's term.

The Township is currently recruiting volunteers who are interested in becoming citizen members of local boards and advisory committees, check the listing of Committees and Boards below for vacancies.

Eligibility

To be eligible to participate as a committee or board member, applicants must be:

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • A Township of Hamilton resident or ratepayer.
  • Not an employee of the Township of Hamilton.
  • Not prohibited by law from voting.

For the Accessibility Advisory Committee, as per the Committee requirements under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), applicants must also identify as having a disability or represent those with disabilities to be eligible.

Accessibility Advisory Committee

The Accessibility Advisory Committee serves in an advisory capacity to increase public awareness of the Accessibility Plan, to identify, remove and prevent barriers for future and continued accessibility in accordance with the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005. The majority of the members of the Committee must be persons with disabilities or who represent people with disabilities.

Mandate

  • To promote equal opportunity and access for all persons, regardless of needs in order that all persons may participate as fully as possible in all aspects of community life in the Township of Hamilton.
  • To act as an advisory body to Council. All recommendations shall be forwarded to Council for consideration.
  • To update and monitor the Accessibility Plan annually for the Township of Hamilton and recommend goals and objectives relating to accessibility issues in the municipality for Council consideration.
  • To make recommendations on accessibility improvements to municipally owned facilities.
  • At the discretion of the Chief Building Official, the Accessibility Advisory Committee be requested to comment on applicable applications and developments.

Committee of Adjustment

The Committee of Adjustment deals with applications for Minor Variances to the Zoning By-law and consents (land severances) for properties within the Township of Hamilton.

Community Recognition Awards Advisory Committee

Mandate

To provide input and recommendations, and to complete applications or the nominations of individuals or groups of the Township who qualify for awards or recognition through any of the various recognition or awards programs offered locally, provincially, federally or privately through professional associations, non-profits, or private businesses / organizations.

Environment and Climate Advisory Committee

Mandate

The purpose of the Environment and Climate Advisory Committee is to promote the protection, maintenance and awareness of the natural environment within the township community, and to provide advice concerning environmental and climate change policy, planning, and actions to be undertaken by Township of Hamilton Council and staff concerning climate change and other environmental matters within municipal jurisdiction.

Fence Viewers Committee

Purpose

The Fence Viewers Committee is appointed by Council pursuant to the provisions of the Line Fences Act to deal with matters related to the arbitration process when neighbours cannot agree on the construction, reconstruction or maintenance of a Line Fence.

Mandate

The Fence Viewers Committee has a mandate to hear disputes between owners of adjoining lands with respect to the construction of a fence to mark the boundary between those lands. The committee shall, when rendering a decision, uphold the intent and purpose of the municipality’s Property Standards By-Laws and Official Plan.

Term

The term of office for Fence Viewers Committee coincides with the term of office for Council.

Heritage Advisory Committee

Mandate

The Council of the Township of Hamilton has agreed that the Heritage Advisory Committee shall provide Council and ratepayers with historical information and guidance on the conservation of properties of architectural and/or historical value or interest in the municipality. The Committee shall promote the history and culture of Hamilton Township.

Purpose

The Heritage Advisory Committee works to provide and prepare the criteria for the evaluation of properties of architectural/historical value (or cultural heritage); to increase public awareness of heritage conservation; prepare a yearly report of activities and to keep the register of historic properties up to date.  The Committee advises and assists Council on all matters relating to buildings and areas of cultural heritage value and in regard to cultural heritage resources.

Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee

Mandate

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee will make recommendations to Council on the programming and utilization of the parks, recreation facilities, waterfronts, and greenspaces within the Township of Hamilton. Assist with the implementation of the Parks and Recreation Facilities Review and the Parks and Recreation Master Plan recommendations. To fundraise, where approved by Council, for special projects associated with Parks and Recreation amenities.

Police Services Board

The Police Services Board is a five member board consisting of (2) two Council Members, (1) one Community Representative and (2) two Provincially appointed Representatives. The Board meets monthly and works with the Ontario Provincial Police in setting up policing priorities for the Municipality.

Property Standards Appeals Committee

Purpose

The Property Standards Committee is appointed by Council pursuant to the provisions of the Building Code Act to deal with matters related to the municipality’s Property Standards By-Law and the municipality’s official plan

Mandate

The Property Standards Committee has a mandate to:

  1. Hear appeals from property owners or occupant with respect to an order served by a Municipal Law Enforcement Officer in cases where the owner or occupant are dissatisfied with the terms and conditions of the order.
  2. In hearing appeals the committee has all the powers of the enforcement officer and may confirm the order, may modify or quash it, or may extend the time for compliance.

The committee shall, when rendering a decision, uphold the intent and purpose of the municipality’s Property Standards By-Laws and Official Plan. The Property Standards Committee decision may be appealed to the Ontario Court (General Division) by the municipality or the owner/occupant affected by the committee’s decision.
