Civil Marriage Solemnization Services

THE TOWNSHIP OF HAMILTON
CIVIL MARRIAGE SOLEMNIZATION SERVICES
The Township of Hamilton is pleased to advise that Civil Marriage Solemnization Service is available in the Township. This service provides an alternate to the Justice of the Peace, for applicants who prefer a Marriage Service without religious connotation.
The Township has contracted Ms. Sandra Bell-Buttars to officiate services.
-
To utilize the Township Civil Marriage Service, you will require a valid Ontario Marriage Licence, issued within three (3) months of the proposed date of marriage. A licence may be obtained at Victoria Hall, 55 King St W., Cobourg or at the Port Hope Municipal Office, 56 Queen Street, Port Hope.
-
A Pre-Service Interview, with both applicants in attendance, shall occur with the Officiant at the Municipal Office prior to the Solemnization Service. This meeting is mandatory and will be about one (1) hour in length. During this meeting, arrangements for the service will be reviewed and specific details will be agreed upon.
-
A minimum of five (5) persons must be in attendance at the Civil Marriage Solemnization Service; the Officiant, the two (2) applicants to be married, plus two (2) witnesses. A maximum of twenty (20) people may be in attendance. It is recommended that witnesses are at least sixteen (16) years of age. If an Interpreter is required, it is the responsibility of the applicants to provide one. The Interpreter is required to attend the Pre-Service Interview and to complete a document at the Service. If either applicant is sixteen (16) or seventeen (17) years of age, parental consent is required.
-
At the discretion of the Officiant, the Pre-Service Interview or the Service may not proceed under certain circumstances. These circumstances can be viewed by clicking on the Hamilton Township Civil Marriage Service Guidelines link at the bottom of this page.
-
The Council Chambers are available for rental on Friday afternoons between noon and 1:30 pm, subject to availability. If the Council Chambers are used, the grounds are also available for photographs. Locations other than the Council Chambers may be considered, subject to being approved by the Officiant.
-
Fees: $350.00 for the Civil Marriage Solemnization Service, $100.00 for use of the Council Chambers and grounds (prices do not include H.S.T.).
